Crisplant, part of the Beumer Group, has been awarded a contract to install a second CrisBag tote-based baggage handling system (BHS) with integrated Standard 3 screening at Calgary International Airport in Canada.
Under the new contract, Crisplant will replace the conveyor-based BHS in the airport’s existing terminal building with the new CrisBag tote-based system. The contract also includes an extension to the existing BHS, which will allow the two systems to be linked extending the traceability of each item of baggage.
Marco Mejia, vice president, planning and engineering, CAA, said, “The new international terminal at Calgary International Airport will incorporate a number of innovative features to support the passenger experience, operational efficiency and sustainability. We have selected Crisplant’s CrisBag system again to support success on all measures across our full baggage handling operation.”
The CrisBag system features a unique start/stop technology that allows sensor-controlled modules to power on and off only when the totes are in operation. This, combined with a top speed of 10m/s (33ft/s), makes CrisBag one of the fastest and most energy-efficient baggage-handling systems in the world.
The new extension linking the two baggage systems will allow both to be operated from a single control room. The combined systems will provide Calgary International Airport with optimized manning and back-up security, in addition to offering passengers the flexibility of checking in at either terminal.

The CrisBag system will provide an initial operating capacity of 8,000 bags per hour when the new International Terminal opens in Q4 2016. Work on replacing the conveyor-based BHS in the existing terminal is scheduled to begin in Q4 2016 with completion and hand-over planned for 2018.
