Japan’s Narita Airport has started work on a complete makeover and expansion of its public toilet facilities to ensure easy accessibility to all customers. The new designs will also help the airport to cope with an influx of passengers using the airport in the lead-up and during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.
All public toilets in the terminals will undergo gradual refurbishment and will be kitted out with audio instructions to help visitors locate toilets and differentiate between male and female facilities; flashlights to provide lighting in an emergency; and the installation of L-shaped handles for better body support for disabled passengers.
The restrooms in areas most frequently used by passengers and airport visitors will feature new designs, larger cubicles to allow passengers to enter with their baggage, and easy-to-use vanity areas.
The ¥5bn (US$45.6m) refurbishment project will begin in Terminal 2 this winter and all upgrades to the 148 restrooms in all three terminals will be completed by March 2020.
