A groundbreaking ceremony is due to take place later this month for the new 12-gate addition to Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT) at Los Angeles Airport in California.
The US$1.6bn Midfield Satellite Concourse (MSC) North Project will cover 750,000ft² over five levels, with 44,000ft² of dining and shopping options and 66,000ft² of airline lounges.
Two of the 12 gates will accommodate the new-generation Airbus 380 super jumbo and Boeing’s 747-8 Intercontinental.
The new facility will be connected to TBIT by two 1,000ft tunnels, one of which will have moving walkways for passengers and the other for utilities.
Construction also includes a Baggage Optimization Project (BOP) that will cover an 85,000ft² North Baggage Handling System structure.
The number of workers on the construction is expected to reach over 6,000, with more than US$195m of the work being completed by Small Business Enterprises.
The MSC and BOP are expected to be operational in late 2019, with the groundbreaking ceremony taking place on February 27.
