Dubai Airports has today (May 5) confirmed that construction work will commence later this year on the expansion of the passenger terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport. The project is scheduled for completion by Q1, 2017.
The terminal building at Al Maktoum Airport, part of Dubai World Central, is currently capable of handling six million passengers a year and the next development phase will see the capacity increase to handle 26 million passengers annually.
The project will involve restructuring the forecourt to provide better access to parking and drop-off facilities, as well as substantially expanding the security, check-in, immigration and baggage areas. The development is part of a wider US$32bn project to build the world’s biggest airport with an annual capacity of 200 million passengers.
Paul Griffiths, CEO, Dubai Airports, the operator for Al Maktoum, said, “With traffic growth continuing at a rapid pace, the expansion of the current facility at DWC will help us accommodate future demand while the construction of the US$32bn program is in progress.”
