Airports Authority India (AAI) says that construction work is now underway on a new terminal building for Pune Airport in the state of Maharashtra to cater for an increase in passenger traffic and ease congestion at the airport.
AAI notes the terminal will be able to process 2,300 passengers (1,700 domestic and 600 international) during peak hours, and is to be equipped with five boarding bridges, 34 check-in counters and an in-line baggage handling system. All this will be housed in an energy efficient building with 4-Star GRIHA Rating. The facility will also include 32,000ft2 (3,000m2 ) of provision for food and retail outlets.
The signature feature of the terminal will be a large canopy structure, covering both the existing building and the new construction. Parking capacity for 1,024 cars will be provided in a new multi-story parking structure, connected to the departure area of the terminal via a sky bridge.
AAI states that more than 40% of the construction work has already been carried out and the new building is scheduled to be completed by March 2022.
