On Monday, July 8, Southampton Airport in the UK launched its first ‘Spirit of SOU’ event – a five-day festival celebrating the airport’s heritage, achievements and plans.
Airport managing director Neil Garwood described it as “a glorious celebration of our extraordinary history as one of the world’s oldest operational airfields, and a look forward to our future”.
Garwood added, “Sustainability is paramount to us, so a big theme running throughout Spirit of SOU week is our award-winning corporate social responsibility strategy, our achievements, and ongoing development of sustainable aviation.
“We want the airport to have that real festival feel, to enhance the experience for our passengers and provide a real understanding of how special Southampton Airport is.
Spirit of SOU will kick off with a Spitfire flypast. Other highlights will include the chance to fly a Spitfire via a virtual reality flight simulator, and the opportunity for passengers to have their photo taken behind the steering column of a near life-size Spitfire. The ‘Heroes of SOU’ exhibition will celebrate the excellence of the airport’s staff.
