Sport and leisure park operator Wave Park Group has unveiled its plans to build Australia’s very first man-made surf park at Melbourne Airport in Victoria.
URBNSURF Melbourne will contain a 1,050ft long lagoon capable of generating multiple waves every 90 seconds, ranging from knee-high waves for novices through to 2m (6.6ft) high waves for experienced surfers.
In addition to the surf lagoon, the park will include retail shops, a café and a plunge pool for swimming, as well as various classes, competitions and tailored programs for customers. The project is expected to create approximately 300 temporary jobs during construction and 45 full-time jobs on completion, which is set for late 2017.
Lyell Strambi, chief executive, Melbourne Airport, said, “We are very excited to be involved in Australia’s first surf park, which will provide a significant contribution to the Victorian and local economies through new jobs and visitors who will come from around the globe.
“This surf park brings a beach-like experience to Tullamarine, providing a fun, open-air entertainment facility for the local community and beyond.
“We welcome Wave Park Group to Melbourne and look forward to working with the company in delivering Australia’s first surf park using technology that has been applied in Wales, Spain and Texas.”
