Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma, USA, has announced that the Oklahoma City Airport Trust has approved its terminal expansion design plans.
The terminal expansion will include a new streamlined security checkpoint, a public observation gallery, increased shopping and dining amenities, space for a future international air service and other high-tech enhancements. The expansion project is driven by the need for more capacity in the terminal.
Currently the airport has one leasable gate available, limiting its ability to attract new airlines. Additionally, TSA models have led to the need for a larger, consolidated security checkpoint with more space both pre and post security.
Architectural firm Frankfurt-Short-Bruza Associates (FSB) led the design process, leveraging global expertise from partners Hellmuth Obata & Kassabaum (HOK), a global aviation design company.
Mark Kranenburg, airports director, Oklahoma City, said, “Our partnership with FSB and HOK, will deliver a truly spectacular addition to the airport terminal. We are positioning ourselves to be a premier airport that balances passenger security with customer experience. The new addition will truly meet that global standard, making Will Rogers World Airport unique to other airports across the country.”
Rick Johnson, principal and COO, FSB, said, “This project is a symbol of the continued growth of our city and will be a welcoming beacon for Oklahoma City travelers. We look forward to making Will Rogers World Airport a destination for travelers around the globe.”
Will Jenkinson, director of HOK’s aviation and transportation practice, said, “The design will enable the airport to attract new airlines and reintroduce international travel, expanding destinations and placing Oklahoma City on the map of the world’s top airports.”
