A ceremony was held today (October 19) to mark the laying of the first foundation stone for the new terminal at Vijayawada Airport in India. Shri P Ashok Gajapathi Raju, union civil aviation minister for India, and N Chandrababu Naidu, chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, attended the ceremony.
The new terminal will cover approximately 100,000ft2 and will be capable of holding up to 500 passengers at any given time. The project will be delivered at a cost of Rs150 crores (US$23.1m) and will include the addition of a new parking garage.
When complete, the terminal will contain state-of-the-art technologies including a new baggage handling system, inclined arrival baggage claim carousels, central air conditioning, a public address (PA) system, flight information display system, CCTV surveillance equipment and self-service check-in counters. It will be built with a modern steel and glass structure and will contain interior designs reflecting the culture of the region.
