San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and United Airlines have today (November 18) opened the airport’s newly renovated Terminal 3 (T3) East Concourse.
The US$253m renovation program has expanded the concourse by 53,000ft² to create additional space for eight new retail and dining concessions and enhanced amenities for passengers, including free wi-fi, 230 power outlets and 200 USB outlets.
The concourse connects boarding areas E and F and includes a consolidated central security checkpoint, three additional aircraft boarding gates and a new 6,000ft² United Club lounge capable of accommodating 130 travelers. The project also introduced four new art installations provided by the San Francisco Arts Commission.
The renovation work for T3 East was executed via a design-build partnership between architecture and design firm Gensler and construction management company Hensel Phelps. This included environmental enhancements to the heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and electrical load centers to help achieve LEED Gold certification.
John L Martin, airport director for SFO, said, “T3 East is the latest expression of our vision for the guest experience at the airport. This inviting, relaxing space features a fresh take on what we aim to deliver in all of our facilities – thoughtful passenger amenities, concessions representing the San Francisco Bay Area, inspiring public artwork, and environmentally-sustainable design.”

Sandra Pineau-Boddison, senior vice president of customers for United Airlines, said, “The latest updates at
SFO create a truly premium experience for our customers. With the area’s modern design and amenities,
San Francisco, the nation’s top trans-Pacific gateway, will continue to offer
the traveler-friendly environment our customers expect at one of the
country’s most prominent airports.”
Jim Pappas, vice president and Northern California district manager for Hensel Phelps, said, “The Hensel Phelps-led design-build team with Gensler is excited to unveil T3 East to the city of San Francisco and the world. This fantastic outcome could not have been accomplished without the tremendous effort, dedication and quality work that was performed by local craftsmen and the subcontracting community.”
