Airport operator Abu Dhabi Airports has announced that Siemens Postal, Parcel and Airport Logistics (SPPAL) will expand and upgrade the baggage handling system (BHS) in Terminal 1 (T1) at Abu Dhabi International Airport in the UAE.
The contract includes the installation of new baggage conveyor lines, an automated hold baggage screening system and explosives trace detection (ETD) equipment. The new system will replace the current manual screening process in the lobby of Terminal 1 and Terminal 1A, freeing up space in the terminal entrance for departing passengers and new retail facilities.
In addition to the BHS upgrades in T1, Siemens will also carry out upgrades in Terminal 3 (T3), including doubling the check-in capacity and expanding the baggage sorting areas.
Ahmad Al Haddabi, chief operations officer at Abu Dhabi Airports, said, “Abu Dhabi Airports has been closely monitoring passenger growth at Abu Dhabi International Airport and implementing development plans that will cater for the increase in traffic. The upgrade to the BHS is another key initiative being completed to ensure efficient flight operations and convenient passenger experience. Abu Dhabi Airports is working closely with Siemens to make sure that normal airport operations continue to run as smoothly as usual with minimal disruption to people traveling. This project is scheduled for completion in early 2016.”
Siemens has completed several projects at Abu Dhabi International Airport including the delivery of a transfer baggage facility in T3 and the installation of a BHS for the first US pre-clearance terminal in the Middle East.
