Václav Havel Airport in Prague, Czech Republic, has opened a new aircraft stand and gate as part of its ongoing development plans.
The reconfigured stand can service either a single long-haul aircraft with a wing-span of 65m (213ft), or two smaller planes with a wing-span of up to 36m (118ft). The new gate is located in Terminal 1 (T1) and will increase the airport’s ability to cater for long-haul flights and larger aircraft, such as the A380.
The new waiting area has a capacity of 430 passengers and is connected to three departure gates. The gate waiting area has been designed by architectural practice Chapman Taylor and is part of a larger plan to modernize and increase capacity at the airport.
Václav Řehoř, CEO of Letiště Praha, the airport operator, said, “The new aircraft stand and gate responds not only to the growing number of checked passengers, but also to the increasing number of long-haul flights being operated out of Václav Havel Airport. The latest route is a United Airlines flight to Newark (New Jersey) that will start next June.
“This is the last project this year,” added Řehoř, “Nevertheless, we have already started preparing for other development projects, including construction of a new baggage sorting facility and the opening of new check-in counters in both airport terminals, which will be completed next year.”
The latest gate project involved the reconfiguration of two older stands for medium-haul aircraft and cost approximately Czk158m (US$7.3m). In addition to the Newark service starting in June 2019, Qatar Airways will fly a Boeing B787 Dreamliner to Doha starting in October this year.
