Architectural practice Aedas has won a competition to design the new Terminal 2 (T2) facility at Yantai Penglai International Airport in China. The expansion project will be key to accommodating the increasing demand for air travel generated by the growing Yantai and Shandong economy.
The 167,000m² (1,800,000ft²) building is being constructed as part of the airport’s second expansion phase and will be located to the south of existing Terminal 1 (T1) facility. Aedas will ensure that T2 contains the flexibility to be further expanded to more than 200,000m² (2,150,000ft²) by 2040, with the ability to serve up to 34 million passengers annually.
Yantai is known for its unique coastal mountains and the sweeping roof form of the terminal has been inspired by the renowned Kunyu Mountain range. The roof will also be permeated with skylights helping to bring natural light deep into the check-in and processing halls.
Aedas will act as the lead design architect as part of an international team consisting of CSWADI and the New Era Airport Design Institute.
