McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Vancouver Airport has begun construction on Phase II of its redevelopment, scheduled to open to customers in Spring 2019.
The construction will add 84,000ft² (7,803m²) of additional retail space and 35 new premium lifestyle brands to the shopping offering. The expansion is expected to create 4000 news jobs for the construction and retail industries.
The new phase will connect at the east of the existing center, mirroring the current European design with the expansion of the open-air village, and more luxury piazzas and cobblestone walkways.
Robert Thurlow, general manager of McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Vancouver Airport, said, “In less than three years the centre has become a key retail destination in Metro Vancouver. We have seen tremendous support from local communities and tourists from all over the world and we’re proud of our growing list of awards and various in-centre events and activities.
“As one of Canada’s best performing malls, we are excited to expand our existing offer, elevating the retail experience for our guests and brand partners.”
The 240,000ft² (22,296m²) center and its more than 70 luxury outlets will remain fully open throughout the construction of Phase II.
Scott Norris, vice president, commercial development, at Vancouver Airport Authority, commented, “The success we’ve seen so far at the centre has been incredible and we are excited to provide the community with more shopping options with Phase II kicking off this spring.
“The Designer Outlet Centre not only creates jobs and encourages tourism for our local community—it is also one of the ways we look at generating revenue outside of airport operations with the goal of keeping costs for our passengers and airlines low. This innovative business model enables us to continue building YVR (Vancouver International Airport) as a world-class connecting hub.”
When Phase I construction was unveiled to customers in 2015, the center welcomed over 170,000 shoppers in what has become known as a record-breaking weekend. Over 24 million passengers transit through Vancouver International Airport every year.
