Engineering firm Mott MacDonald has been appointed by airport operator Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) to design a set of tunnels spanning 2.6km (1.6 miles) at Hong Kong International Airport in China.
The tunnels will house the automated people mover (APM) and baggage handling systems (BHS) for the proposed third runway concourse, which is due to be built as part of the three-runway system (3RS) expansion project.
When complete, the tunnels will connect Terminal 2 and an APM depot at one end, with the proposed third runway concourse at the other. Most of the tunnels will be constructed on newly reclaimed land supporting the expansion of the airport.

Our combination of tunnel experience and extensive track record at Hong Kong International Airport has given the AAHK confidence that we will be able to deliver this challenging scheme to the highest standard.”
Mott MacDonald has been working continuously at Hong Kong Airport for more than 20 years. This has included setting out the development strategy and design of Terminal 1 and the North Satellite Concourse, as well as the design of Terminal 2. The company is currently working as part of a joint venture to deliver the Midfield Concourse, which opened at the end of 2015.
Mott MacDonald also completed the environmental impact assessment for the planned 3RS program and will carry out the environmental monitoring over the next decade.
