A groundbreaking ceremony was held yesterday (September 14) as construction work got underway for the new Terminal 2 (T2) Parking Plaza at San Diego International Airport in California.
The cutting-edge parking garage will be located directly opposite the terminal and will have three floors with approximately 3,000 parking stalls. It will replace the existing surface parking lot for T2 and will have an aesthetically pleasing design with open light wells, glass-front elevators and public artwork.
The Parking Plaza will enhance customer service by integrating state-of-the-art parking technology that will allow motorists to reserve spaces in advance, find available parking spaces, and streamline payment. This is expected to help reduce air emissions caused by vehicles circulating and idling while searching for an available parking space. Construction will take approximately 20 months to complete and will be open for summer 2018.
Thella F Bowens, president/CEO, San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, the airport operator, said, “San Diego International Airport travelers spoke and we listened. There is great demand for more closed-in parking at the airport. Kicking off the Parking Plaza construction is an important milestone to help improve the short-term parking customer experience.”
