Automation specialist Vanderlande has been contracted to design and install a new baggage handling system (BHS) for the newly constructed Terminal 2 (T2) facility at Domodedovo International Airport in Russia.
T2 is being constructed to facilitate the increasing numbers of passengers handled by the airport (30 million in 2015) and will be handed over in time for the FIFA World Cup, which is being staged in Russia in 2018. The new terminal will be linked to the existing Terminal 1 (T1) building, which will help to optimize connection times.
The new T2 BHS will incorporate a range of Vanderlande solutions, including the company’s TUBTRAX 2.0 individual carrier system and BAGSTORE, with more than 1,000 storage positions. In addition, an advanced hold baggage screening system compliant with ECAC 3 will be integrated, as well as check-in positions and carousels. It is expected that the system will be capable of handling up to 5,400 bags per hour.
Andrew Manship, executive vice president – airports, Vanderlande, said, “We faced strong competition to secure the contract with Domodedovo. The negotiations were lengthy, and we are delighted to be doing business with airport once again. However, the real work starts now. Our team faces a tight deadline, but I am confident that our excellent relationship and extensive experience will ensure we deliver a world-class BHS on schedule.”
