Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport in France has been recognized for its carbon reduction efforts by the Airports Council International’s Airport Carbon Accreditation program, which has certified the airport at Level 3 Optimization.
Lyon Airports, the airport operator, has put in place numerous initiatives to lower its carbon emissions in the past eight years and has registered a 14% decrease in CO2 emissions from 2012 to 2015. The operator also ensures that 100% of all electricity used by the airport is green.
The creation of a Carbon Club in 2015 has also helped promote a culture of countering global warming at the airport. More than 20 companies, representing half of the 5,800 employees present on-site, worked with Lyon Airports to help extend its collection of data on CO2 emissions. This included employee travel, energy usage and aircraft traffic. Moving forward, the operator plans to introduce electric vehicles and optimize aircraft runway movements.
