A new passenger bridge has been lifted into place at Edinburgh Airport in Scotland as part of a £20m (US$25m) investment in transportation access.
The bridge will connect the rest of the airport to the new £5m (US$6.4m) East Terminus, next to the current tram stop, which will house the airport’s taxi drop-off and pick-up area. The East Terminus is due to be finished by May 2020.
The existing taxi rank will move from the ground floor of the multi-story parking lot to the east side of the airport, adjacent to the tram stop. Taxis will be able to access the facility by using the road over the old runway, reducing congestion at peak times.
The East Terminus will also provide covered walkways for passengers, a new passenger bridge, a new PRM waiting area, and a self-service kiosk for booking private taxis.
The second phase of the project will deliver a new access road to further ease congestion on Eastfield Road and will see the entire drop-off function move to the new facility.
Gordon Dewar, chief executive of Edinburgh Airport, said, “By investing in our infrastructure, we’ll be able to deliver better access for public transport and increase those travel options for passengers, directly improving their journey.”
