A joint initiative between Japan’s Centrair International Airport and Aichi Prefectural Handa Agricultural High School has been recognized by the Urban Greening Organization.
The Green Curtain project consists of passion fruit plants grown by Handa Agricultural High School being installed on the wall of the passageway between the airport’s Access Plaza and Terminal 1 from spring to summer every year since 2012. The passion fruit plants are taken care of by the students, becoming not only an environmentally friendly curtain that covers the sunny passageway but also a relaxing green space with flowers and fruits.
As more than 300 passion fruits are harvested annually, they are sold at restaurants in the airport. In 2018, an original menu utilizing the fruits was co-developed by Alice Dining Restaurant and Handa Agricultural High School students. The Urban Greening Organization evaluates consideration for the environment, company-student collaboration, and local production for local consumption projects in Japan.
