Collins Aerospace has announced several new products and partnerships at this year’s Passenger Terminal Expo, taking place at London’s ExCeL on March 26, 27 and 28.
The company has unveiled its SelfPass biometric facial scanning solution that is said to be the world’s first truly end-to-end single enrollment biometric system that allows passengers to register their biometric details once and then use the solution every time they travel.
“SelfPass is a single enrollment that can be used permanently and indefinitely – passengers enroll once and use many times,” said Tony Chapman, director global product management and strategy information management services at Collins Aerospace. “Users can enroll off-site using a mobile device or website to upload their biographical data and then add the biometric data when they get to the first touchpoint at the airport. This biometric profile can then be reused for bag drop, at the security checkpoint, for lounge access, and for boarding the aircraft for that and any future journey. We believe it is one of the world’s first total end-to-end solutions that covers not just one airport but multiple airports, multiple journeys, multiple airlines and multiple countries.”
The company has announced that SelfPass is now in use by JetBlue at New York’s JFK International Airport in cooperation with US Customs Border and Protection and will also be trialled at Bristol Airport in the UK and Dublin Airport in Ireland.
“Dublin and Bristol airports are changing the way passengers travel and making the process easier and more efficient. For example, it takes less than one second to capture and process a passenger’s facial image and eliminates the need to repeatedly present travel documents,” said Christopher Forrest, vice president of global airport systems at Collins Aerospace. “We see this as another leap forward for our biometric technology to play a key role in making the connected aviation ecosystem a reality.”
At Bristol, the new trial will biometrically enable multiple touchpoints, including check-in, self-service bag drop, security, boarding gates and airport lounges, and passengers will be able to enroll via their mobile or the website.
Collins Aerospace has also launched its SelfDrop R-Series self-service bag drop at Passenger Terminal Expo, with live demonstrations being held on stand 6030 throughout the three-day event.
SelfDrop is fully modular and will replace existing check-in desks. The fully enclosed system includes security features such as intrusion detection and a physical door to prevent unauthorised objects, and includes weighscales, linerless tags and payment facilities for excess luggage payments.
“We’ve been deploying self-service bag drop for four years now, but they have been retrofit where they’ve been fitted onto an existing desk using the existing conveyor belt and weighscale,” explained Chapman. “We now have a totally new refit unit which replaces the old desks – it’s a new design and concept that allows airports to redesign their terminal space. It is fully autonomous and is fully integrated with SelfPass biometric validation so that the correct passenger is dropping their own bag.”
