People tracking specialist Xovis is at Passenger Terminal Expo with a brand-new product, an object tracking solution which is still under development and is being demonstrated for the first time at the expo.
The technology uses ultra-wide band (UWB) beacons which can be attached to everything from trolleys and wheelchairs to canine units or even staff. The beacons communicate with base stations positioned throughout the airport, which have a range of up to 250m2 and allow the assets to be tracked with an accuracy of up to a couple of centimetres.
When used to track staff, the new technology also works together with Xovis’ 3D optical tracking technology, which has been improved with AI functions to recognise images and patterns, for example, recognising staff badges to be able to further fine-tune staff allocation. The AI technology can also distinguish gender, which is particularly useful for airport retail areas.
The tracked assets can then be displayed on Xovis’ dashboard software, integrating with the company’s existing people tracking solution to allow the airport to allocate staff to locations where there is congestion or where trolleys have been abandoned.
