Plans to build a second terminal building and reserve runway at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok have been approved by the airport operator Airports of Thailand (AoT). The Bangkok Post reports that the project will cost approximately THB48bn (US$1.47bn) with THB28bn (US$860m) set aside for the new passenger terminal and THB20bn (US$610m) for the reserve runway.
The second terminal building will cover approximately 870,000ft2 and will allow the airport to handle an extra 20 million passengers a year. The four-storey building will also have a car park with space for up to 3,000 cars. It will be connected to the main airport via a monorail system.
Prasong Phunthanet, board chairman for AoT, said, “Both projects are deemed urgent and are not included in the second phase of Suvarnabhumi airport’s development plan. The reserve runway will be completed in 2017 to accommodate increases in flight numbers, or to be used when the first and second runways undergo major repairs in the future.
“The new terminal building will solve congestion at the airport. When completed in 2019, Suvarnabhumi airport will be able to support 65 million passengers a year.”
