Plans to renovate the Central Terminal Building (CTB) at LaGuardia Airport in New York have been delayed by three months in order to give more time to a committee assessing a broader airport redesign competition.
Responding to the news, Joe Sitt, chairman and founder of the Global Gateway Alliance (GGA), an advocacy organization for the development of the region’s airports, said, “Another day, another airport delay. For months we’ve been told that there was nothing stopping the selection of a developer to bring LaGuardia’s central terminal into the 21st century. Now it’s clear that the project is delayed.
“While ensuring coordination between projects is important for the future of the airports, the CTB process has now been going on for more than three years. The CTB is the linchpin in finally improving LaGuardia’s reputation and meeting the airport’s growth needs, and it’s past time for the project to move forward to choosing a developer and starting construction.”
According to a report by newsday.com, John J Degnan, chairman of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the airport operator, said, “My expectation is that within the 90-day period the Port Authority will have a motion on the table to approve a particular bidder. We cannot, in my judgment, allow this request for proposals (RFP) to go undecided for more than the 90-day period.”
