The National Assembly of Vietnam has approved plans to build a new multibillion-dollar international airport in southern Vietnam. The facility, which will be located in the Dong Nai Province, approximately 40km northeast of Ho Chi Minh City, will be able to handle 100 million passengers when it is complete.
Currently named Long Thanh International Airport, the new development will strive to become a regional hub for international air transit. The project is estimated to cost around US$16bn and will be undertaken in three stages.
The first stage will include the construction of a runway and a passenger terminal capable of serving 25 million passengers, and it is hoped that this stage will be completed by 2025. A timeline for the following two phases has yet to be set.
