Airport operator and owner, the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority (GOAA), has selected Denver-based architectural firm Fentress to help design the new US$1.8bn South Terminal at Orlando International Airport in Florida, USA.
According to a report by the Orlando Business Journal, GOAA gave airport officials the green light to begin working with Fentress after an internal meeting held on August 19, 2015. The expansion will add 16-24 gates for both international and domestic travelers.
According to the report, Curtis W Fentress, president and CEO of Fentress Architects, said, “One of the things we want to do is take the Orlando experience to a new place, to the future. We will have a lot of focus groups, meetings with the community, the airport board and stakeholders and the passengers to form what our design is. In Orlando, there’s a lot of imagery in the plants and materials that are part of things here, and that’s very exciting food for thought for architects.”
Frank Kruppenbacher, chairman of GOAA, said, “My whole view of the design is an exceedingly passenger friendly simple process for everyone – a disabled person, an older person, a child – to be able to arrive at the airport and depart or land in the terminal, and say we have thought of everything to make that experience work.”
