Bali Airport closes due to volcanic eruption threat

Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport has closed as Mount Agung threatens to erupt. The ash clouds from the volcano reach heights of almost 10,000ft, and magma is clearly visible at its peak.

On November 28, almost 60,000 tourists were reported to be stuck on the island due to the airport’s closure, which has seen more than 440 flights being canceled for a second day. In the northeast of the island, roads and buildings are covered in ash and over 100,000 people have been evacuated.

Indonesia has updated its Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation (VONA) to red – its highest warning – and claims the ash cloud could reach 19,654ft (6,142m). Experts believe the volcano’s eruption is imminent, and it is not known when the airport will reopen.
