Vilnius Airport runway reconstruction to be completed to schedule

The reconstruction of the runway at Vilnius Airport in Lithuania will be successfully completed on August 17 as scheduled, said the airport director Olaf Martens.

This prediction has been made based on the current progress status, with contractors having already strengthened the ground around the runway, replaced the runway pavements and began the installation of drainage and rainwater collection systems.

Martens commented, “The halfway point of the reconstruction, which will last for 35 days in total, has already passed. We have already done most of the work – the paving of the runway is completed. Of course, we still have a lot of work to do during the remaining days.

“But everything is going according to our plans. We even managed to finish several tasks faster than planned and create an additional time buffer. This allows us to be sure that we will be able to return to Vilnius on time. We are glad to announce that because this is a unique project of national importance.”

The runway reconstruction started on July 14 and in total, 100km (62 miles) of power cables, 240 inspection manholes and 1,000 lights will be installed. During the construction, flights to the Lithuanian airport have been diverted to Kaunas Airport, which prepared for the hike in passenger footfall since the beginning of the year.
