London Luton Airport hits 15 million passenger milestone

luton airport milestone passenger terminal worldLondon Luton Airport (LLA) has hit a new milestone in its 79-year history, with 15 million passengers passing through in the last 12 months.

More than 1.2 million passengers flew through LLA in March alone, representing a 15.7% increase in footfall compared with the same period last year. This marks three years of continuous growth at the airport.

A number of new routes on offer has been partly credited with the hike in passengers, with EasyJet launching two new routes to the Isle of Man and to Stockholm, Sweden; Blue Air introducing a route to Cluj Napoca in Romania; and Ryanair flying to Dusseldorf Weeze, Germany.

Nick Barton, CEO of LLA, commented, “15 million passengers over 12 months is a significant milestone for us. We’re doing our bit to meet passenger demand and we hope the government and train operators will do their bit by introducing more fast trains to Luton.”

LLA is currently investing over £110m (US$137m) to increase passenger capacity to 18 million per annum by 2020. Redevelopment plans include a redesign of the terminal, better road access to the M1, improved rail links at Luton Parkway and a remodeled bus and coach interchange.
