Tote-based baggage handling certified by the TSA

The Beumer Group’s tote-based baggage handling system, CrisBag, has been certified by the Transport Security Administration for in-tote security screening, the company has announced at Passenger Terminal Expo 2017 in Amsterdam.

Kim Madsen, senior system manager of IT and Controls, Airport and Logistics Systems for the Beumer Group, said, “CrisBag has 100% tracking, it needs less maintenance and consumes less power compared to traditional conveyors. The certification means that US airports can now consider this technology.”

The certification of CrisBag applies to USA airports making migration to a RFID-enabled tote-based baggage handling system more attractive to airports there. It also benefits airports outside of the USA that implement, or plan to implement, USA pre-border clearance.

The in-tote screening, when used with Morpho Detection’s CTX 9800 DSi explosives detection system, meets the detection and false alarm rates for explosives specified by the TSA.

Tote-based systems have been accepted by airports throughout Canada, Europe, the Middle East and Asia, but they are a relatively new concept for North American airports.

Recently, Calgary International Airport selected a second CrisBag system after having successfully implemented it in their new international terminal. Last year, BEUMER Group was awarded a design and build contract at San Francisco Airport for the first US tote-based individual carrier system for baggage handling.
