Mumbai airport renames domestic terminal

Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport has changed the name of its domestic terminal from 1B to T1. Officials claim the name change is to make it more relatable to the international terminal – T2 – and more recognizable to passengers.

Domestic airlines including IndiGo, SpiceJet and GoAir are among those already operating from the renamed terminal. Other domestic airlines, including Air India, Jet Airways and Vistara, had previously moved to T2. Apparently the split in domestic flights across the two terminals has caused confusion for passengers, which the name change hopes to address.

A statement from Mumbai International Airport Pvt Ltd (MIAL), said, “The decision to rename Terminal 1B was taken to help in easy identification of the terminal and to ensure hassle-free transit for air travelers.”

An airline official told the Hindustan Times newspaper, “There have been cases of many T2-bound fliers turning up at T1 owing to poor awareness. The move might reduce the number of no-shows. While T1 is in Santa Cruz, the Sahar-based T2 is a good 15-20 minute drive away. Passengers who end up at the wrong terminal are unable to cover the distance in time.”
