Retail operator Westfield has completed its Terminal 2 (T2) redevelopment project at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in California, USA.
Westfield invested US$78.3m in the T2 project, which transformed approximately 76,000ft² of terminal space including 16 new retail and dining outlets and a modernized common area. The project was completed in partnership with Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), the operator for LAX.
The construction work was divided into hundreds of smaller projects over a 20-month period in order to keep disruptions to a minimum in the 24-hour terminal. The project was the terminal’s first upgrade in nearly 30 years.
Deborah Flint, CEO for Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), said, “Fresh facilities with more seating, new services, and expanded dining and shopping experiences for today’s travelers are part of our US$332m investment in T2. We applaud Westfield’s partnership with LAWA, its investment in T2 at LAX, and the company’s commitment to developing an experience that truly caters to the modern traveler.”
Keith Kaplan, vice president – development, Westfield, said, “LAWA had a strong vision. They wanted more than a concessions refresh – they wanted to truly transform the entire customer journey at T2 from the moment you clear security. Thanks to our long-term partnership and collaboration with all the stakeholders, everybody wins – the city of Los Angeles, the airport, the airlines and the customers.”
Eric Garcetti, mayor of Los Angeles, said, “Los Angeles is the center of international travel, and this spectacular new terminal will help us broaden our global reach even further. With the help of our partners, we have turned this terminal into a beautiful new space – and an expression of our commitment to building the world-class airport our residents and visitors expect and deserve.”
Westfield is also undertaking transformation projects at LAX terminals 1, 3, 6 and in the Tom Bradley International Terminal, which opened in 2013.
