Senior Airport Planner

Dallas/Fort Worth Airport, Texas

Position Summary:
As a member of the infrastructure and development team you will participate in short and long-range airport planning efforts pertaining to all aspects of the airport; airfield/airspace, facility development, land-use, commercial development, infrastructure, roadways, ground transportation, and studies to optimize airport related processes, operations, and facilities. Our 2016 strategic plan expands the number of key results from four to six and begins with the overarching key result of customer experience. The supporting key results are business performance, employee engagement, operational excellence, community engagement, and the foundational key result is safety and security. As an essential member of the planning department you will help execute the airport’s strategic plan and take our business to new heights enhancing the airport’s contribution to our community and region. The airport’s success depends on you and your ability to execute the strategic plan, build working relationships and effectively meet project deadlines.

The primary responsibilities of the Senior Airport Planner will be to manage airport planning activities ranging from small to large projects addressing airport development, infrastructure, and land use needs. Additional responsibilities include preparation of master plans demand/capacity analysis, airfield and terminal planning, facility requirements, alternatives analysis, capital improvement programs, airport layout plans, site selection studies, obstruction analysis, forecasting, noise and environmental evaluations, terminal area plans, sustainability evaluations, and other airport planning tasks and projects.

Performance objectives:
• Develop work plans and apply strategic thinking to provide innovative, sustainable solutions to airport’s planning needs.

• Assist in the development and preparation of updates to the airport master plan to meet future aviation demand.

• Supervise and monitor performance of consultants conducting short and long range airport planning studies. Examples may include 10-year capital improvement program (CIP) updates, annual activity forecasts, airfield and airspace analysis, facility and land use planning studies as well as passenger facilitation assessments.

• Analyze airport board and tenant initiated projects to ensure compatibility with the airport master plan, the 10-year CIP and DFW Airport standards.

• Determine airport process improvements using detailed analytical simulation, modeling, and optimization to ensure operational efficiency.

• Preparation of technical white papers, programming and conceptual design submittals, and detailed reports pertaining to a multitude of planning studies.

• Oversight and management of delivery orders, including but not limited to, project scoping, estimating, fee negotiation, stakeholder collaboration and obtaining board acceptance.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Aviation Planning, Transportation Planning, Civil/Transportation Engineering, Architecture, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
  • Five (5) years of professional-level experience in airport planning activities.
  • Three (3) years of experience in a coordinating or lead position.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be substituted for the above on a year-for- year basis.
  • Possession of a valid Class C driver’s license.
